Description:
Average body length is 18-28" and weight is 12-35 pounds.
Size and weight vary quite a bit depending on sex and food supply.
Females are usually smaller than males.
Breeding:
Females produce one litter, averaging 4-5 kits, per
year
Habits
& Haunts: This adaptable animal is found in many
different habitats especially near streams, ponds and marshes.
Raccoon populations are actually densest in suburban and urban
areas. Preferred nesting sites are tree hollows but in urban areas
they may nest in drainpipes, attics and crawl spaces. They are
fairly sociable and often den together. They may sleep for a good
portion of the winter but do not truly hibernate. The home range
is approx. 1 mile in diameter and they are nocturnal but are occasionally
active in daytime.
Food:
They'll
eat almost anything they can find in their environment! From insects
to crops to garbage, depending on where they live.
